IK4-CIDETEC is a non-profit Foundation whose mission is to serve the industrial sectors related to electrochemistry, to increase and consolidate the technological level of companies, and enhance their competitiveness through the implementation of innovative procedures and products based on electrochemical technologies. Its core activity is the field of applied research. IK4-CIDETEC addresses all electrochemical technologies, applying its experience and know-how in three areas of activity: Energy, Surface Finishing and New Materials. IK4-CIDETEC has an annual turnover of 10M€ and at the present time employs 125 researchers.
The University of Münster is one of Germany's biggest institutions of higher education. The Institute of Physical Chemistry hosts the Lithium Battery Group lead by Prof. Winter and Prof. Passerini. The group is focused on the development of new materials and systems for electrochemical conversion storage devices, in particular for automotive applications. Within the group, background is present in electrochemistry and materials science and engineering, and, as support, analytical chemistry, synthetic chemistry and polymer chemistry. Since its establishment in 2008, the WWU battery group is being involved in more than 15 German national projects and 4 European projects (ILLIBATT, ORION, AMELIE, LABOHR) focused on advanced lithium batteries.
Polytype Converting AG (PCF) is a globally acting company who is engaged in the business of developing, optimizing and selling converting processes such as coating, drying, laminating and web handling processes. PCF is also engaged in the business of developing, manufacturing and selling associated converting equipment such as complete coating, drying and laminating machines, as well as components of such machines including winders, coating stations and dryers. PCF has a fundamental understanding of the underlying physical principles that govern the aforementioned processes (know-why), and it has more than 50 years of practical experience in these technologies (know-how). PCF operates a Technical Center, which is equipped with two semi-industrial coating machines, on which some 50 different coating methods can be tested. Moreover, a narrow-width coating line, which is suitable for process and product formulation development, will be installed in early 2011. PCF belongs to the WIFAG – Polytype Holding; it has about 65 employees and achieves an annual turnover of about € 25 mio.
KEMET Electronics Italia srl, located in Sasso Marconi (Bologna, Italy) is a KEMET group company. The company produces and sales metallized plastic film, electronic and electric capacitors in plastic film and other electronic and electric components. Main application fields are telecommunications, automotive electronics, RFI suppressors, instrumentation and consumer electronics, such as TV, monitors, computers, Hi-Fi, electrical appliances, etc. Industrial applications for machines control devices, measure instruments, motor starters and power factor correction. Since 1986, the Mechanical division of KEMET Electronics Italia (previously Arcotronics Industries srl) is developing battery equipment (mainly lithium cylindrical batteries) and as of 1991 is manufacturing plants for the production of lithium-ion batteries with liquid and polymer electrolyte. Since 1998 KEMET Electronics Italia is also producing equipment for EDLC ultracapacitors manufacturing, high speed winding systems for batteries (2005) and is developing PHEV (Plug Hybrid Electrical Vehicle) batteries assembly systems (2008). KEMET Electronics Italia has three factories located in Italy and employs more than 800 people. According to the Kemet management philosophy, the technological progress is a priority and this is the reason why more than 2% of the turnover is invested in R&D. The development of parts and components for the automotive market and mainly for the hybrid car (to reduce consumption and pollution) is a priority mission inside Kemet group.
POLIMI was established in 1863 and is the largest technical university in Italy. The Department of Chemistry, Materials and Chemical Engineering “G. Natta” was established in 2001, merging three pre-existing chemistry-oriented departments. One of these was the scientific home of the Chemistry Nobel Prize winner Giulio Natta (shared with K. Ziegler in 1963). Teaching activities cover Bachelor, Master and Ph.D. programs in Chemical Engineering and in Materials Engineering. Research activities cover a wide range of fields within pure and applied chemistry, chemical engineering, materials science and technology.
ENEA is a governmental scientific research and technology development organization with vast, internationally recognized experience in conducting advanced research programs and implementing complex projects in the fields of research and innovation for the sustainable development and environment safeguard. In the field of transport many programs on batteries, fuel cells and advanced vehicles are underway, also in co-operation with industry, academic institutions and research organizations at national and international levels. Since mid-80’s ENEA is conducting research & development programs on lithium technologies for mobile and consumer applications, being involved in several national and European (LIBERAL, HyWays, Hysis, ILHYPOS, ILLIBATT, HELIOS, HCV) projects focused on advanced batteries and super-capacitors.

The Materials and Surface Science Institute (MSSI) at the University of Limerick is the principal research institute investigating topics of industrial significance in the fields of surface science and materials. The Institute currently houses 256 researchers in four prioritised research themes: Health, Energy, Transport, and Clean Technology and collaborates with over 100 European research centres established through a host of research contracts during frameworks 5-7. The Carbolea Research initiative at UL investigates production of chemicals and fuels from renewable feedstocks, such as woods and grasses, or from waste materials.

The AIT is a highly-specialized R&D partner focusing on key infrastructure issues of the future. The AIT Mobility Department focuses on the development of safe, efficient and green mobility solutions. The unique feature is the holistic approach regarding the systemic contemplation of vehicle, transportation infrastructure and transportation system, which institutes new possibilities in the research environment: Methodically, an integrated and simulation-based approach is pursued which discloses optimisation potential through the usage of high-quality data in models and algorithms as well as enabling validation of simulations using sophisticated research infrastructure.
RESCOLL is private technology centre of materials specialised on composites and polymers. RESCOLL’s activities are industrial research and development of innovative products and processes. With a team of 40 doctors, engineers and technicians RESCOLL has been at the origin of more than 40 patents in the field of polymers and composites. Presently RESCOLL is close partner of AIRBUS, DASSAULT AVIATION, EADS IW, SAFRAN Group and many other big groups working in composites and polymers. RESCOLL has also work with companies related to the energy production as SAFT (batteries) and GAMESA (eolic). However, RESCOLL is running development and innovation projects in many other industrial fields.

The Karlsruhe Institute for Technology (KIT) is the institution that founded — in cooperation with the University of Ulm — and supervises the Helmholtz Institute Ulm for Electrochemical Energy Storage (HIU). Associated partners are the German Aerospace Center (DLR), also member of the Helmholtz Association, and the Center for Solar Energy and Hydrogen Research Baden-Wuerttemberg (ZSW). The Karlsruhe Institute of Technology (KIT), principal contributor of HIU, combines the status of University of Baden-Wuertemberg and large-scale research institute of the Helmholtz association. The Helmholtz-Institute Ulm (HIU) focuses on 5 main fields of Electrochemical Energy storage, namely basic research in electrochemistry, materials research, theory and modelling of (electro) chemical processes, system considerations and analytical methods.
